Memories Captured: Back to School

Posted on Aug 13, 2012 in life, My Girls | 28 comments

My girls head back to school two weeks from today. This week is the last week they’ll be around to really relax and enjoy their lazy summer days. Next week will be busy with school open houses and orientations and supply shopping. Plus we’ll force them to wake up early to prepare themselves for the early wake-ups the following week. So today, before the back to school grind really gets into full gear, seems like a perfect day to review pictures of my girls on the first day of school from years past. I did the same thing last year, but I think it’s fun to repeat every year with a new picture added.

2006: Jenny on her first day of school, heading to Kindergarten. (Wasn’t she so tiny??)

2008: Jenny heading to 2nd grade, Reagan looking sad that she’s not starting school yet.

(And yes, I know I skipped 2007. I swear she went to school that year, but I can’t find a first day of school picture.)

2009: 3rd grade for Jenny, and finally Kindergarten for little Reagan

2010: 4th grade for Jenny, 1st grade for Reagan

2011: 5th grade for Jenny (last year of elementary school!) and 2nd grade for Reagan

They’ve grown so much, haven’t they? We’ve already done our back to school clothes shopping for this year, but they haven’t quite decided which outfits they’ll wear the first day of school. But come back two weeks from today and you’ll see!

  2. What lovely little ladies you have! I love how you did this. Can I steal it? My kids start on Thursday!!

    • Um, yeah, please do! I want to see pictures of your kids every year (or every week).

  3. I look back on my son’s first day of school pictures and it makes me emotional. I can’t believe he’ll be starting 7th grade next month!

    Your girls are adorable!!

    • The whole growing up thing really gets to me sometimes, too :)

  4. Oh, little Jenny in Kindergarten…how darn cute!! I have a picture with the same face as Reagan when Ash was headed off to school but she has a bag of goldfish instead of a juice box.

I love to see your girls grow up and one day, we’ll get to see Brinky too! (Let’s not rush that though. I’m enjoying having a little one in the group.)

    • I kind of want Brinky to stay little – but I was thinking the same thing. Won’t be long before he’s in these pictures too! And Jenny will be a surly teenager annoyed that I’m taking first day of school pictures :)

  5. Thanks so much for stopping by Mom’s Test Kitchen! Happy Monday!

    • I know – it’s so fast! I actually have always liked back to school time, even though it’s hectic. There’s always about one week (even when I was younger and in school) that I’m really excited and feel organized before things return to the usual hectic unorganized craziness :)

  7. I love your timeline for them. So powerful seeing their growth.

  9. Oh my gosh! It’s wild to see how much they have grown year to year. I love that idea and might have to borrow it from you. Your girls are beautiful. Enjoy the last bit of summer.

    • Please do borrow it – I love to see this kind of post. It’s always fun to look back – you really see how much they’ve grown that way!

  10. Ohmyheart, I absolutely LOVE these through the years photos! Such a great idea!

And, le sigh, back to school already?! So, so very fast, yes?

    Lovely, and lovingly, done, you!

    • Thanks, Galit! It always amazing me how quickly summer goes by. I think part of that is because we spend the last couple weeks getting all geared up for school and it’s hard to just relax and enjoy summer at that point!

  11. Wow, Your kids have grown!
You just gave me the fabulous idea to look at my kids first day of school pictures with them. It will be fun for them to see how much they have grown.

    • You should do it – my girls always think it’s fun to look at old pictures!

  12. Thanks for leaving a comment on my post, leading me to you! As you probably saw, my little one is only 10 months old, so I can’t even fathom how I’ll feel when she’s off to kindergarden. I love your yearly First Day of School pictures. That’s a great idea!

    • I can’t imagine my little one at that age either, even though I’ve already experienced it with my girls! Thanks for stopping by.

  13. Amazing how they’ve grown. And both of us with middle schoolers this year. I think I’m gonna cry. :)
    Susi recently posted..My Boy…My Profile

    • Oh, I’m sure I will! We have middle school boot camp next week (that’s what the principal calls it) and then they have their first day the week after – I don’t think I’m ready!

  14. Oh, my…
My oldest ( of 3 ) is also starting Middle School in a few weeks.

Instead of making a beautiful photo montage and saying nice things, I am just in complete denial.
    Complete. :)

I love this, it really makes me realize, looking at your pics, how quickly these years go by. They fly. Uncatchable.

    • Looking back is easier sometimes than actually letting myself sit and think about my oldest starting middle school!
