Memories Captured: 11

Jenny turned 11 on Wednesday. And her main gift from us (besides the fun party tomorrow night with her friends) was her first cell phone. Now I know that when she asked us to give her a phone about 6 months ago, I said no because I didn’t think it was necessary yet, and I’d always said she wouldn’t get one before she turned 11 and was ready to head to middle school. I gave it a lot of thought over the last month and decided she’s ready. She seems mature enough and she understands the rules she’s been given. And if she breaks them? The phone will be taken away. Plus now I have perks like being able to call her when she’s downstairs and I’m upstairs and we don’t want to wake up the baby by yelling. We all win.

Linking up with Alison and Galit for Memories Captured (at almost the last minute!):

  1. I thought it was pretty neat yesterday that I could call her on her new cell phone to wish her happy birthday!

    • It’s definitely easier in some ways!

  2. Happy Birthday to your 11 year old!! That has been a debate around here too, when to get a phone. I say wait until they’re in “double-digits”, which is only a year away for my oldest.

    • Yes, double digits at least!

  3. So how much time does she spend on the phone? :)

Thank you for linking up with us!

    • She hasn’t been too bad yet, but I think it will only get worse once the school year starts and she and her friends exchange phone numbers for all their new phones :)

  4. How awesome for her! That ‘texting’ thing is quite a fun thing to do even for us grownups! Happy Birthday to your daughter, and I hope she has a wonderful party!

    • Thank you!

  5. It sounds like she will do a great job with it. I hope she had a wonderful birthday!

    • So far, so good :)

  6. I have to say, if there was an 11 year mature enough to have a cell phone it is Jenny! I also agree with you that it is a good idea for middle school. There is so much going on before and after school that you just need that way to reach them or for them to reach you.
    Happy Birthday again to Jenny!!!

    • I think it will definitely be helpful for middle school!

  7. Ha! Good point about being able to call her and not wake Brinky! Very smart. And I’m glad you made a point about phone rules–that’s so important.

    • I think we’ll have to go through the phone rules a few more times once school starts up again :)

  8. Happy Birthday to Jenny! My 5 year old asked for a phone for his birthday and I nearly passed out. Now I can tell him that he has to wait until he’s 11…at least. :-)

    • Oh, my 8 year old definitely thinks it’s not fair that she didn’t get a phone yet!

  9. Happy birthday to your daughter. I’ll be interested to hear how she does with her phone. Our 11 year old wants one — but I’m just not ready to spend time policing her yet.

    • So far, so good. It’s very fortunate that there’s a lot of monitoring I can do online of what she’s doing. Plus she’s so scared that we’ll take it away that she doesn’t break the rules!

  10. I love the idea of the phone as intercom… we’ve had the cell phone debate quite a bit. The 9 year old insists that EVERYONE in 5th grade has a phone and she’ll be the only one without one if I don’t speed up the purchasing agreement. She’ll be 10 in December, and I really can’t fathom her having a cell (she has rights to the land line at home).

    • Exactly – we let Jenny use the land line whenever she wanted, so why did she need a phone before now? Middle school seems a little different to me and exposes her to more activities, new friends, etc. where I’ll feel more comfortable if she has an easy way to get in touch with me. Before then? Not necessary at all!

  11. Oh I’m not looking forward to the day my girls want phones. But like you, I’d have rules!

    • Rules are very important!
